An excellent beginner horn for the price! Feb 13, 2009

This Cecilio Tenor Saxophone was my first sax after picking it back up from when I stopped in high school. It's a great beginner horn with quality and durable construction for it's price range. It's also a surprisingly warm sounding horn and actually worthy of playing out....and not to mention it's a beautiful looking sax under the stage lights. My only suggestion would be to lightly condition the pads as they tend to be prone to sticking if you play this sax every day for several hours each. I would also highly recommend getting a better mouthpiece as the one that comes with this is pretty cheap and is not very precise in its construction. Also get better reeds as the reeds with this horn are cheap, off brand reeds. Mouthpieces play an integral part of the sax's overall sound (arguably more than 50 percent of the sound quality) and it's important you have a good mouthpiece for sound as well as comfort. The cheap mouthpiece was the only reason this sax didn't get 5 stars, but obviously the price would be much higher if it had come with a better one.
A few things to remember when purchasing a Cecilio. Cecilio is at the higher end of the cheap sax spectrum. There are much more lower quality saxophones out there and when dealing with these types of saxophones, it's important to choose a reputable dealer and not someone simply shipping a sax from some warehouse in China without ever making one last inspection of their product before shipping. If possible, try to make sure you know your dealer. Ask if they personally inspect each instrument they ship out because there are too many report and reviews that say they received their instrument damaged or unplayable for whatever reason. It's an extra step like that which will further ensure you get a quality product and it's for that reason many good cheap saxophones get a bad rap. It goes without saying that there are many terrible saxophones out there, but Cecilio is one of the better basic sax makers and as long as you get a decently assembled sax, you should not be disapointed with a Cecilio. When you get better, then you can drop a few grand on a more professional saxophone.

a resounding "meh" Apr 29, 2008
By B. Andrews No doubt about it. This horn is beautiful. The red lacquer is bright and will stand out in any crowd. I received the horn in poor condition however. The keys were so stiff they wouldn't move. Many keys didn't have proper seals. The C key was nowhere near even looking like it would close. It is obvious that this horn was not looked at before it left the factory I'm sure once the horn is in proper repair that it will play quite well. Be prepared though. You might want to plan to add a couple hundred dollars in repair costs to the price tag...

Good for Beginner May 29, 2010

I ordered this as my first saxophone and I must say it's not perfect, but it's certainly doing fine for beginning purposes. There are two notes which always skip the octave, most likely due to leaks, so I'm planning to have that checked out. Also, I highly recommend buying a different mouthpiece. I got this one Selmer Goldentone Saxophone Mouthpieces, Tenor and the difference was IMMEDIATELY noticeable, much easier to play. The kit that it comes with is very thorough. Overall, it's still a saxophone, so if you're a beginner it works fine and doesn't get much cheaper than this. I'm still having tons of fun, even with the dead notes, and any tenor saxophone sounds great.
