| | Description | Develop your own voice with the practice techniques that have helped make Joe Lovano one of the most respected improvisers of our time. In this Berklee Workshop, Lovano shows you how to play with the greater spontaneity and feeling. He'll teach you how to interpret the melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic essence of a tune. Create your improvisational ideas from within these musical elements. And make sure your journeys arrive somewhere. Lovano brings these ideas to life in solo, duo, trio, and quartet performances filled with his expressive sax lines. His lessons will help you make the most of your solo practice time, and interact more creatively with other musicians. Perhaps most importantly, Lovano will inspire you to relax, hear the music, feel the mood, and let your ideas flow. 59 minutes. With his restless creativity and brilliant improvisational skills, many critics consider Joe Lovano a legitimate successor to Coltrane, Parker, and the other giants of jazz saxophone. Lovano is a multiple Grammy nominee and 2-time "Artist of the Year" in Down Beat magazine's readers and critics poll. He also won "Album of the Year" honors from both JazzTimes magazine and the Jazz Journalists Association.Lovano has appeared in dozens of acclaimed albums as both leader and sideman. The many great musicians he's worked with include Woody Herman, Chet Baker, Elvin Jones, Mel Lewis, Charlie Haden, Bill Frisell, and John Scofield. | |

Time well spent with an affable jazz pro with something to say Jul 20, 2011
By David Ciaffardini This professional quality production sharply captures the kind of hour-long jazz masterclass that you would get if you were at the Berklee music school and signed up to hear Mr. Lovano share tips and philosophy about jazz improvisation. Plus we get a behind-the-scenes sit-down interview with Mr. Lovano interspersed throughout.
Overall its an hour-weill spent for those hoping to tap the improv vibe that is essential to jazz and which Mr. Lovano seems to live and breathe. There are no tips on "fingering", no riffs to imitate, no chalk-board lecturing. But without a doubt, Joe Lovano has something to say here.
On the technical side what Mr. Lovano presents may go over the heads of some beginners. What Mr. Lovano teaches here is how to consider and play the beat of tunes, making a distinction between treating a 4/4 piece as 4/4 versus 2/2. The difference he explains and demonstrates is simple but profound and can make a huge difference in the feel a player imparts on any particular tune. Lovano doesn't give you a blueprint for making this happen, but he doubles down on trying to get you to feel and intuit the difference and incorporate that into your playing from here on out.
And what a pleasant "jazzy" guy Mr. Lovano is, nearly a stereotype of the world-wise, affable, cool, professional jazz cat that any hardcore jazz fan would love to hang out and rap with until the wee hours.

Quite Useless Apr 10, 2007
By Aji Bought this for my grandson along with Larry Monroe's DVD (Improvisation Jazz Experience). Monroe's is actually useful. I'm not sure what Lovano was trying to say, he basically keeps repeating that one should have a 'personal' approach but offers no real insight on what this means or how to break it down to develop your own approach. Very disappointing, feels like a complete waste.
